SANTA FE - About 23,882 families in New Mexico are still eligible for $10.7 million in state child tax credits they did not claim for 2023 and 2024, according to the Taxation and Revenue Department.

In August, the department notified households that appeared eligible for at least $100 but did not claim the credit. Since then, 7,334 new or amended returns have been filed, delivering $3.7 million to taxpayers.

To qualify, filers must be New Mexico residents with qualifying children and cannot be claimed as dependents by someone else. The credit ranges from $25 to $622 per child, based on income.

“New Mexico’s child tax credit helps eradicate child poverty by putting money back in the pockets of families with children. We want every family eligible to claim the credits they’re owed,” Taxation and Revenue Secretary Stephanie Schardin Clarke said.

Taxpayers can file or amend returns for free on the department’s Taxpayer Access Point: https://tap.state.nm.us. More information is available on the agency’s site under “New Mexico Child Tax Credit” and “Personal Income Tax Information Overview.” For help, visit https://www.tax.newmexico.gov/contact-us/ or call 1-866-285-2996.
