The Las Cruces Fire Department has graduated 16 cadets from its 38th Fire Academy. Some will begin field work this week, while others complete EMT certification.

LAS CRUCES - Sixteen cadets have officially joined the ranks of the Las Cruces Fire Department following their graduation from the city’s 38th Fire Academy.

The department held its commencement ceremony Friday at the Rio Grande Theatre in downtown Las Cruces.

The new graduates are Jacob Arellano, Jacob Baldwin, Rebekah Butler, Patrick Cardon, Alejandro Carrillo, Jacob Casillas, Henry Gardner, Samuel Grant, Brian Korn, Jazmin Martinez, Trent Mims, Juan Ortiz Villa, Charles Ray, Leah Schnell, Shane Sowers and Melvin Villegas.

Beginning June 29, cadets who already hold an EMT-Basic license will be assigned to one of the city’s eight fire stations for emergency response duties. The rest will complete an additional eight weeks of EMT-Basic training before receiving licensure.

The 16-week Fire Academy includes 640 hours of classroom instruction and field training in firefighting tactics, hazardous materials response, vehicle extrication, technical rescue and fire inspection.
