Suspect taken into custody after confrontation in central Las Cruces, police say

LAS CRUCES - A 53-year-old man was killed Tuesday afternoon in a shooting on west Amador Avenue, and a 26-year-old suspect is in custody, according to Las Cruces police.

The shooting occurred shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, following a confrontation between two men in the 900 block of west Amador Avenue. Officers arriving at the scene found the 53-year-old man with at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the man was armed with a knife during the encounter.

Officers located a 26-year-old man believed to be the shooter a short distance away and took him into custody without further incident. The man has not been publicly identified.

Las Cruces police detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
