A deadly explosion, a consequential primary and a chance to shape OMN coverage

A deadly explosion, a consequential primary and a chance to shape OMN coverage

Good morning, and happy Sunday from Organ Mountain News.

Some weeks leave southern New Mexico with more questions than answers.

In Las Cruces, investigators are working to determine what caused an explosion and fire that killed one person inside a Fairway Drive duplex. With Tuesday’s primary election approaching, voters are also making decisions that will shape local leadership — including the race for Doña Ana County sheriff — while new turnout numbers offer an early look at how independent voters are participating under New Mexico’s semi-open primary system.

Later today, a new statewide conversation about jobs and family economic security comes to KRWG Studios in Las Cruces, with music, community discussion and, yes, sopapillas.

And at Organ Mountain News, we’re asking a question of our own: What stories, concerns and experiences should guide our reporting next?

One person died after an explosion and fire heavily damaged a duplex on Fairway Drive in Las Cruces late Thursday morning. Firefighters found the unidentified victim inside the structure after extinguishing the fire.

The explosion and fire caused part of the structure to collapse, primarily the garage roof, while three residents of the adjoining home were temporarily displaced. Investigators from the Las Cruces Fire Department, Las Cruces Police Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are working to determine the cause.
