ANTHONY - An Anthony man faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after authorities say he struggled with police officers responding to a domestic disturbance call and attempted to take an officer’s Taser.

Manuel Saenz, 51, was arrested March 8 and booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center on charges including disarming a peace officer, two counts of battery on a peace officer, two counts of assault on a peace officer and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Doña Ana County Magistrate Court, officers with the Anthony Police Department were dispatched to 780 Church St., Apt. 2 in reference to an in-progress domestic disturbance.

When officers arrived and attempted to detain Saenz, he pulled away from an officer who tried to grab his hands, according to the statement of probable cause. Police say Saenz grabbed a sergeant’s radio during the struggle and threw the officer’s shoe at him after it came off during the altercation.

Court documents state that when an officer drew his Taser, Saenz grabbed it and attempted to take it from the officer before the officer regained control. Police also allege Saenz kicked an officer in the legs and threw a bottle of windshield washer fluid that struck an officer’s leg.

Officers eventually placed Saenz in handcuffs and transported him from the scene, according to court records.

Saenz is scheduled to appear for a review of conditions of release hearing at 8:30 a.m. March 12, followed by a preliminary examination set for 8:30 a.m. March 18 in Doña Ana County Magistrate Court in Las Cruces.
