LAS CRUCES - A 22-year-old Anthony man has been charged months after a fatal crash on Interstate 10 east of Las Cruces that investigators say occurred after he drove about 120 mph and rear-ended another vehicle.

Gabriel Paul Bowersox faces charges of homicide by vehicle, great bodily injury by vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident involving death or great bodily harm and several related traffic offenses, according to court records.

The charges stem from a crash that occurred shortly after midnight on Sept. 28, 2025, on Interstate 10 near mile marker 146, a few miles east of the Interstate 10 and Interstate 25 interchange.

According to an affidavit filed in the case, investigators say Bowersox was driving a 2021 Dodge Challenger when the vehicle rear-ended a Kia SUV traveling ahead of him on the interstate.

The driver of the Kia, identified in court records as Paul Anthony Duran, was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:55 a.m. by the Office of the Medical Investigator.

A passenger in the Kia, Sheryl Lynn Duran, was transported to MountainView Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

A witness told investigators the Challenger passed his vehicle moments before the crash at an estimated speed of about 120 mph.

After the crash, witnesses reported that the driver of the Challenger removed a 12-pack of Twisted Tea alcoholic beverages from the vehicle and threw it into nearby bushes before fleeing the scene with passengers.

Investigators say the occupants ran from the crash site and into nearby pecan orchards along Las Alturas Drive before later contacting authorities.

Passengers told investigators the group had attended a party in Berino earlier that night. According to the affidavit, Bowersox had initially planned to serve as the designated driver but later admitted he took a shot of alcohol at the party before leaving.

Bowersox later told investigators he had been driving the Challenger and ran from the crash scene because he feared being arrested for driving while intoxicated. He also told officers he was concerned a DWI arrest could affect his ability to obtain a commercial driver’s license.

Court records show prosecutors filed charges in the case March 2 and a judge issued an arrest warrant the same day.

Bowersox was booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center on March 6 and remained held without bond, according to jail records.

A status conference in the case is scheduled for March 12 in state District Court.
