The agency is cutting costs for families and easing fuel loads across New Mexico public lands

Organ Mountain News report

SANTA FE - The Bureau of Land Management has launched a winter affordability initiative that drops personal-use Christmas tree and firewood permit fees to $1 across New Mexico through Jan. 31.

State Director Melanie Barnes said the savings will help families who rely on public lands for seasonal traditions, heating and access to local woodland resources.

Under the fee reduction, households can now collect up to 10 cords of firewood and up to three Christmas trees. BLM officials said the expanded limits will help reduce hazardous fuels and improve forest health in cutting areas approved for personal use.

The agency expects the initiative to contribute to national savings estimated at more than $9.4 million this holiday season.

BLM will continue working with Tribal governments, community partners and local organizations to share information about available permits and updated cutting areas.

Residents can find permit locations, cutting maps and safety guidance on the BLM New Mexico Christmas tree permits webpage. Some permits are available online at forestproducts.blm.gov, with others offered in person at the following BLM offices:
