LAS CRUCES - The Bureau of Land Management is selling personal-use fuelwood permits through its Las Cruces District Office and online.

Permits for the Las Cruces District cost $20 per cord and are valid year-round for dead and down or standing dead wood in the Pinos Altos Fuelwood Area.

Permits can be purchased in person at the BLM Las Cruces District Office, 1800 Marquess St., from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Las Cruces District permits are also available online at forestproducts.blm.gov. Online purchases require a credit or debit card and access to a printer because buyers must print the permit, maps, instructions and haul tags.

BLM said maps of open wood-cutting areas and applicable rules are provided with permits.

The agency warned that cutting or removing wood from BLM land without a valid permit can result in penalties of more than $300. Cutting green trees where prohibited can result in fines starting at $300, plus $50 for each additional tree.

For more information, contact the Las Cruces District Office at 575-525-4300.
