A person wanted on multiple felony warrants died Thursday after barricading themself inside a Telshor Boulevard apartment where a fire broke out during a SWAT-style standoff, according to the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office.

LAS CRUCES - A person wanted on multiple felony warrants died Thursday after barricading themself inside an apartment on Telshor Boulevard where a fire broke out during a standoff, the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies located the person earlier in the evening and tried to make contact, but the individual refused to come out and barricaded themself inside, according to DASO. During the standoff, a fire started in the building, prompting evacuations.

Las Cruces firefighters arrived quickly and put out the blaze. After the fire was extinguished, deputies found the person dead inside the apartment, officials said.

No other injuries were reported. DASO investigators remained on scene through the night. Authorities urged the public to stay clear of the area while the investigation continues.
