LAS CRUCES - A Doña Ana County sheriff’s deputy was killed Tuesday after his patrol unit collided with a semi-truck on Interstate 10 near the Avenida de Mesilla exit.

Deputy Antonio Aleman, 33, was on duty when the crash occurred around 5 p.m., according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office. He was transported to MountainView Regional Medical Center, where life-saving measures were unsuccessful.

Aleman had served with the department since April 2021. He is survived by his wife and two children.

An escort will accompany Aleman’s body to Funeraria Del Angel in El Paso following an examination by the Office of the Medical Investigator. Personnel from the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office, along with deputies from Socorro, Sierra and Bernalillo counties, will take part in the law enforcement procession.

The crash remains under investigation by the New Mexico State Police. No additional details have been released.

A colleague who once supervised Aleman reflected privately on social media, describing him as “always positive and ready to give the best you had.” He expressed condolences to Aleman’s family and said the news of his death was deeply painful. “Gone but never forgotten,” he wrote.

The Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude to partner agencies — including Doña Ana County Fire & Rescue, New Mexico State Police, U.S. Border Patrol, Las Cruces police and fire departments — for their support.
