LAS CRUCES - More than 3,500 Doña Ana County residents have already voted in New Mexico's 2026 general election, placing the county second statewide in ballots cast as expanded early voting locations prepare to open Saturday.

According to voter participation reports released Tuesday, Oct. 13, by the New Mexico Secretary of State's Office, 3,532 Doña Ana County voters have cast ballots since early voting began Oct. 6.

That includes 3,431 votes cast early in person and 101 absentee ballots recorded as voted.

Statewide, 29,786 ballots have been cast, including 27,122 early in-person votes and 2,664 absentee ballots.

Bernalillo County leads the state with 4,036 votes cast, followed by Doña Ana County with 3,532 and Santa Fe County with 3,092.

The figures represent participation reported through Oct. 13, not final turnout. They also do not indicate which candidates voters supported.

Democratic voters account for the largest share of ballots cast so far in Doña Ana County, followed by Republicans and voters who declined to state a party affiliation.

These figures reflect voters' registration status, not votes for particular candidates or parties.

Absentee ballot requests exceed 8,500 locally

The Secretary of State's separate absentee ballot report shows 8,506 requests from Doña Ana County voters as of Tuesday.

Statewide, voters have requested 81,153 absentee ballots.

Those figures represent ballot requests, not completed or returned ballots. They should not be added to the totals of votes already cast.

The reports also show 234 voters statewide have used same-day voter registration during the election, including 30 in Doña Ana County.

New Mexico allows eligible residents to register and vote on the same day at designated locations even though the regular online and mail registration deadline passed Oct. 6.

Important election dates

Several key deadlines remain before Election Day:

  • Saturday, Oct. 17: Expanded early voting begins at additional polling locations throughout New Mexico.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 20: Last day to request an absentee ballot by mail.
  • Saturday, Oct. 31: Final day of early voting.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 3: General Election Day. Polling locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Completed absentee ballots must be received by 7 p.m.

Eligible residents who missed the regular registration deadline can still use same-day registration at their county clerk's office or designated polling locations.

Voters can check their registration, view a sample ballot, find voting locations and request or track an absentee ballot through the state's NMVote voter information portal.

Early voting locations and hours vary by county.

The Secretary of State's Office will continue updating voter participation figures as the Nov. 3 election approaches.
