Statewide delay tied to pending legislation on veterans' exemptions; protest deadline is June 2

Organ Mountain News report

LAS CRUCES - Doña Ana County property owners will receive their annual Notices of Value by mail on May 1 — a month later than usual — due to legislative delays related to property tax exemptions for veterans.

Typically mailed in early April, the delay this year comes as state lawmakers considered changes to the property tax code. The Notices of Value determine a property's assessed value for tax purposes and give owners the opportunity to review and dispute that assessment.

June 2 protest deadline

Property owners have until June 2 to file a protest or request a change to their exemption status. After that date, changes for the 2025 tax year will no longer be accepted.

Residents can protest their valuation or apply for exemptions under the categories of head of household, veteran, charitable or educational.

The Assessor’s Office is also open during regular business hours at the Doña Ana County Government Center, 845 N. Motel Blvd. Residents can call 575-647-7400 with questions.
