LAS CRUCES - An earthquake that struck West Texas late Friday was felt by some residents in southern New Mexico and the El Paso area, according to reports.

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a 5.3-magnitude earthquake near Mentone, Texas, at approximately 10:30 p.m. The epicenter was about 50 miles south of Carlsbad at a depth of four miles. Several aftershocks followed in the same area.

Residents in Las Cruces, El Paso, and parts of southeastern New Mexico, including Carlsbad, Clovis, Hobbs, and Roswell, may have experienced tremors. There have been no reports of damage in New Mexico.
