Las Cruces firefighters contained the blaze within minutes and prevented it from spreading to neighboring units

LAS CRUCES - Fire damaged an apartment complex on the 200 block of West Madrid Avenue on Thursday evening, but firefighters quickly contained the blaze and prevented it from spreading, according to authorities.

Fire crews responded to a reported structure fire just after 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, and found heavy fire coming from a downstairs apartment unit. Firefighters initiated an interior fire attack and searched for possible occupants, officials said.

The fire was brought under control within about five minutes of crews’ arrival. Firefighters were able to limit damage by preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent apartment units.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
