LAS CRUCES - Parents and caregivers can receive free help installing or checking their child safety seats during a fitting station event Thursday, May 1, in Las Cruces.

Certified child passenger safety technicians will be available from 3 to 5 p.m. at Sisbarro Buick-GMC, 425 W. Boutz Road, to inspect seats and offer personalized guidance.

The event is open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. No appointment is required.

Technicians will spend about 30 minutes per seat, helping caregivers understand how to properly install and use their child or booster seats. Attendees are encouraged to bring the car seat, the car seat manual, the vehicle manual and — if possible — the child who uses the seat.

A $35 fee may apply if a replacement seat is needed, and children must be present to qualify for a replacement. If a seat is found to be recalled, expired or unsafe, a replacement may be provided.

The event is part of a statewide series of car seat fitting stations funded by the New Mexico Department of Transportation’s Traffic Safety Division.
