LAS CRUCES - A 19-year-old Las Cruces man has been charged after police say he shot a woman during an early-morning domestic dispute near downtown Las Cruces.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Doña Ana County Magistrate Court, officers were dispatched around 2:52 a.m. Tuesday to the 500 block of West Griggs Avenue for a report of a domestic disturbance that was later upgraded to a shooting.

When officers arrived, they found blood on the sidewalk between two adjacent apartments. The woman was located inside a nearby unit with multiple gunshot wounds while residents attempted to provide aid until emergency responders arrived.

Investigators identified the suspect as Daniel Sanchez Miller, 19, who lives at the apartment where the shooting occurred.

Witnesses told police they heard the couple arguing in the courtyard before the woman left the complex and returned a short time later. According to the complaint, neighbors said they heard the woman kicking and yelling at the front door before hearing approximately four to five gunshots.

The woman was later found bleeding in the courtyard and taken to a nearby apartment while waiting for emergency responders, according to investigators.

Police say the two had been in an on-and-off dating relationship for several years.

Miller told investigators the woman had previously threatened him with a kitchen knife and that a struggle occurred inside the apartment before she was pushed outside. He told police she returned and kicked the front door several times before he fired four shots at her, according to the complaint.

Officers later recovered a Taurus G2C 9mm handgun inside the apartment along with multiple spent shell casings and other evidence related to the shooting.

According to investigators, the woman suffered gunshot wounds to the hip and buttocks, along with additional injuries consistent with grazing bullet wounds. She was transported to Memorial Medical Center for surgery and was listed in stable condition.

Miller was arrested and booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center on a charge of aggravated battery against a household member with a deadly weapon, a third-degree felony.
