LAS CRUCES - An inmate at a southern New Mexico correctional facility is accused of stabbing another inmate at least eight times with a makeshift knife during an attack captured on surveillance video, according to court documents.

Fabian Marcos Bojorquez, 26, faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and possession of a deadly weapon by a prisoner in connection with the Nov. 25, 2025 incident at the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility.

According to an affidavit for arrest warrant, surveillance video shows Bojorquez waiting near another inmate before launching the attack. Investigators allege Bojorquez used a makeshift knife, commonly referred to as a shank, to stab the inmate multiple times.

The victim suffered several injuries, including stab wounds to the upper back and cuts to the chin and under the right eye, and was transported to Memorial Medical Center for treatment, according to court records.

A correctional officer responding to the incident gave commands for the inmates to stop, but they did not comply. The officer then fired a non-lethal shotgun round that struck the victim in the leg, bringing the altercation to an end, according to the affidavit.

Court documents state Bojorquez continued the assault until the weapon was dropped. Investigators later recovered an object wrapped in white string that was consistent with a makeshift stabbing weapon.

Prosecutors have filed a motion seeking Bojorquez’s pretrial detention, arguing that no release conditions would reasonably protect the safety of others or the community. The motion cites the defendant’s alleged violent conduct and the fact that the incident occurred while he was already incarcerated.

The filing also notes Bojorquez has prior convictions, including battery upon a peace officer, and argues that previous incarceration has not deterred his behavior.

A pretrial detention hearing is scheduled for Thursday, March 26, before District Judge Douglas Driggers.
