LAS CRUCES – Two candidates are now in the running for Las Cruces City Council’s District 6 seat. Business and nonprofit leader John Muñoz announced his candidacy this week, joining Tommy Black, who launched his campaign on June 19.

“I’m honored by the support I’ve received from so many across our community,” Muñoz said in a statement. “Las Cruces is at a crossroads, and I believe we can move forward together with smart growth, compassionate leadership and bold action.”

Muñoz’s background includes leading multi-state operations teams and nonprofits, managing multimillion-dollar budgets and overseeing thousands of employees. He is a past president of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and currently serves on the Greater Las Cruces Chamber board. He is founder and chair of The New America School Board, CEO and president of the Downtown Las Cruces Partnership and chief relations officer of Electronic Caregiver.

Campaign manager Kevin Goodall, a veteran and retiree, said Muñoz offers “smart growth that respects our community’s values and brings opportunity to every corner of District 6.”

Campaign treasurer Jeffery Silva added that Muñoz’s approach to community safety, “integrating behavioral health, substance cessation and housing initiatives,” would have a measurable impact.

Muñoz said his campaign platform will focus on community safety, creating high-paying sustainable jobs, supporting unhoused residents with structured services, expanding affordable housing and improving city services for youth and senior adults.

“This campaign is about listening, leading with integrity and building a city that works for everyone,” Muñoz said.

Muñoz joins Tommy Black in the race for the District 6 seat. Black announced his candidacy on June 19, with OMN reporting on the launch June 22.

Potential candidates must file declarations of candidacy with the County Clerk between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2025, to officially enter the race. The regular local election will be held Nov. 4.
