Las Cruces firefighters located one deceased victim inside the structure after extinguishing the fire, according to the city of Las Cruces. Authorities have not yet identified the victim.

Officials said the victim’s remains will be transported to the New Mexico Medical Investigator’s Office in Albuquerque for an autopsy.

The incident was reported as an explosion shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday, May 28. Investigators from the Las Cruces Fire Department, Las Cruces Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating the cause of the explosion and resulting fire.

Firefighters continued searching through debris Thursday afternoon to ensure no additional victims remained inside the structure.

The explosion and fire caused part of the structure to collapse, primarily the roof of the garage, according to the city. Two vehicles were inside the garage at the time.

Officials said the single-story residence was part of a duplex. The adjoining two-story residence to the west sustained minimal structural damage, though smoke damage was reported.
