Police and fire urge families to take precautions around pools, rivers and lakes

Organ Mountain News report

LAS CRUCES - As temperatures climb across southern New Mexico, local police and fire officials are reminding residents to stay alert and follow basic precautions when cooling off in pools, lakes or the Rio Grande.

Las Cruces Fire Department and Las Cruces Police Department issued a joint list of water safety tips this week, emphasizing the need for adult supervision and preparation — especially when children, older adults or alcohol are involved.

Key recommendations include:

  • Never leave children or elderly individuals unattended near water — including pools, hot tubs, rivers or lakes.
  • Don’t rely on swimming lessons or floaties as a substitute for supervision.
  • Keep pool areas secured and equipment accessible, including removing ladders and covering pools when not in use.
  • Avoid distractions like texting or reading while supervising swimmers.
  • Use life vests on the water when boating or rafting, and never go alone.
  • Avoid irrigation canals and unknown bodies of water, which may be shallow or hazardous.
  • Learn CPR and encourage others to do the same.

Officials also warned of strong currents, submerged debris and shifting conditions in the Rio Grande that can turn recreational outings dangerous. If an emergency occurs, residents are urged to call 911 immediately.
