LAS CRUCES - Las Cruces residents can get free microchips for their dogs during an event ahead of the Fourth of July holiday.

The City of Las Cruces, District 5 Councilor Becky Corran and the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley will host the free dog microchipping event from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 27, in the first-floor lobby of Las Cruces City Hall, 700 N. Main St.

Free microchipping will be available for the first 100 dogs on a first-come, first-served basis.

City officials said the Fourth of July holiday is one of the busiest times of the year for lost pets because of fireworks and increased activity. Microchips provide a permanent form of identification that can help shelters reunite lost pets with their owners.

Pet owners are encouraged to arrive early. Dogs should be kept on a leash or in a secure carrier throughout the event.
