LAS CRUCES - Veterinary care in southern New Mexico is getting a boost as five new veterinarians begin work at clinics in the Las Cruces area.

The hires are supported by Animal Companions of Las Cruces, a nonprofit that recruits veterinary students and recent graduates to expand local care options. The organization provides externships with per diem awards for students covering travel, housing and meals, as well as employment bonus awards for new hires at local clinics.

“This wouldn’t have happened without all of you donors, without all of you veterinary clinics and people who work in them,” said Jean Berlowitz, Animal Companions of Las Cruces board member. “We thank everybody and we are so excited to welcome all these wonderful new vets to Las Cruces.”

The nonprofit also supported three veterinary students this summer through externships at local practices: Maria Carr and Chloe Santos at Calista Animal Hospital and Annalise Guy at Schumacher Veterinary Clinic.
