Organ Mountain News report

LAS CRUCES - Children heading out for Halloween in Las Cruces can pick up free glow sticks at city fire stations Oct. 31 as police and fire officials encourage families to take precautions while trick-or-treating.

The Las Cruces Fire Department will distribute glow sticks at all city fire stations on Halloween, while supplies last. The glow sticks are intended to help make children more visible to motorists and others after dark.

The Las Cruces police and fire departments are reminding parents that young trick-or-treaters should be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult, preferably while traveling in groups.

Officials also encourage families to choose costumes that are easy to see, fit properly and do not obstruct children's vision or movement.

Halloween safety tips

The city recommends several precautions for trick-or-treaters, homeowners and motorists, including staying on sidewalks, using designated crosswalks and keeping costumes away from open flames.

Halloween Safety Tips

The Las Cruces police and fire departments recommend:

  • Accompany children while trick-or-treating and, if possible, travel in groups.
  • Choose costumes that are visible to homeowners and motorists.
  • Carry a flashlight after dark and consider adding glow sticks to costumes.
  • Make sure costumes fit properly and do not restrict movement or vision.
  • Keep costumes and decorations away from candles and other open flames.
  • Use battery-operated candles or glow sticks instead of open flames in jack-o'-lanterns.
  • Stay on sidewalks and designated walkways.
  • Cross streets at marked crosswalks after checking for approaching vehicles.
  • Keep children under close supervision throughout the evening.
  • Ensure walkways and entrances are well-lit and free of hazards for visitors.
  • Secure pets that might frighten, knock down or become aggressive toward children.
  • Drive cautiously through neighborhoods and watch for children crossing streets.
  • Inspect candy and treats before consumption. Discard anything unwrapped or improperly sealed.
  • Report suspicious activity, inappropriate behavior or dangerous situations to police.

Free glow sticks: Available at all Las Cruces fire stations Saturday, Oct. 31, while supplies last.

Be considerate of neighbors

City officials also remind families that not every household celebrates Halloween or welcomes trick-or-treaters.

Residents are encouraged to visit homes displaying Halloween decorations or welcoming lighting and to keep trick-or-treating activities within reasonable evening hours.

Motorists should remain especially alert for children and increased pedestrian traffic in residential neighborhoods throughout Halloween evening.

The free glow sticks will be available Saturday, Oct. 31, at all Las Cruces fire stations while supplies last.
