Las Cruces shooting suspect ordered held pending trial

LAS CRUCES - An 18-year-old charged in an Aug. 21 shooting on Idaho Avenue will remain in custody pending trial after a district judge granted prosecutors’ motion for pretrial detention Thursday.
District Court Judge Conrad Perea found that the Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office proved Jerimiah Angel Castillo Zubiran poses a danger to the community and that no release conditions would reasonably ensure the safety of others.
Castillo Zubiran is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and tampering with evidence.

Prosecutors allege Castillo Zubiran fired several rounds at three people who were walking on Idaho Avenue on Aug. 21.
A 36-year-old victim was struck once in the upper body and grazed by another bullet, according to the district attorney’s office. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment.
A trial date has not been scheduled.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Heather Chavez is prosecuting the case. The Las Cruces Police Department investigated.
“This is yet another example of young individuals using firearms to resolve issues,” Chavez said in a statement. “We will continue to hold offenders accountable so that they do not remain a threat to the citizens of Doña Ana County.”
