LAS CRUCES - A Las Cruces man is facing a felony charge after New Mexico State Police say he threw a dog into traffic on Interstate 10, causing the animal to be run over and killed.

Russell Adams, 53, is charged with extreme cruelty to animals, a fourth-degree felony, according to court records.

State police said a driver reported seeing a man throw a brown dog into the roadway near mile marker 121 westbound, forcing the vehicle to strike the animal.

The driver provided dashcam footage showing the incident, and the dog was later found dead near mile marker 111, according to the criminal complaint.

Investigators said Adams’ actions were intentional and resulted in the dog’s death.

He was arrested March 25 and booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center.
