Two relatives sought protection orders a day after the arrest of Caleb Jaramillo, accused of causing nearly $18,000 in damage inside a home.

LAS CRUCES - Caleb Dane Jaramillo has been charged with felony criminal damage to property after police say he caused nearly $18,000 in damage inside a home during a domestic-related incident on Oct. 21.

According to a statement of probable cause filed in Doña Ana County Magistrate Court, officers were called to a residence on Roadrunner Circle in Las Cruces after reports that Jaramillo was suicidal and possibly running a vehicle inside a closed garage. When officers arrived, they found walls, cabinets and curtains sprayed with black and blue paint.

Investigators wrote that the home’s residents, who were out of town, had received text messages from Jaramillo saying he had damaged property. Surveillance video reportedly showed him shirtless and spray-painting the kitchen and living-room walls.

Inside the home, police reported finding black and blue spray-paint across the kitchen and living-room walls, with phrases such as “Sue Me,” “I’m Homeless” and “Prison” written on them, according to court documents.

A contractor estimated the damage at about $17,700. Jaramillo was arrested and booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center on one count of criminal damage to property of a household member over $1,000, a fourth-degree felony.

Court records show that two relatives filed petitions for protection the next day, citing safety concerns and requesting that Jaramillo stay away from the home. A public-safety assessment rated him low risk, and a release decision is pending.
