Andrea Halvorson recognized as one of eight immunization “champions” for boosting vaccine awareness and access

LAS CRUCES - A Las Cruces public health nurse is among eight New Mexico Department of Health employees honored for standout work improving access to vaccinations statewide.

The New Mexico Immunization Coalition presented its annual Immunization Champion Awards during a Nov. 21 conference at the Marriott Pyramid North in Albuquerque. The awards recognize health workers who improve vaccination rates and help families stay informed.

Andrea Halvorson, a registered public health nurse at the Las Cruces Public Health Office, was honored for consistently educating patients about the importance of vaccines and making vaccine recommendations during every visit, regardless of the reason for the appointment.

Other honorees include:

Erica Flores, Melissa Padilla and Crystal Trujillo, the Metro Region Immunization Coordinator Team, for promoting and improving vaccination efforts
Nathaniel Webb, an epidemiologist who created a comprehensive measles outbreak dashboard during the 2025 measles outbreak
Scott Minard, nurse manager for the San Juan County Public Health Offices, for leading improvements in immunization rates and education
Rickie Eslick, nurse manager for the Quay and De Baca Public Health Offices, for traveling throughout rural communities to provide vaccines
Roberta Baca, clinic clerk with the Socorro Public Health Office, for educating families and ensuring children have access to vaccines
Anita Smith, former nurse manager for the Santa Fe Public Health Office, recognized for vaccine inventory work and ensuring equitable vaccine access

“We want to thank those individuals who are going above and beyond to protect their community from viruses,” said Andrea Romero, section manager of NMDOH’s Immunization Program. “Their desire to lead the way inspires others to do more to protect our state’s children and adults.”
