Investigators say suspect and victim were involved in an altercation before the shooting

LAS CRUCES - A man suspected in the fatal shooting of 36-year-old Justin Griffin on Lynch Drive was arrested Friday, according to Las Cruces police.

Saul Camarena, 41, was taken into custody around 2 p.m. after officers located him at a home on the city’s East Mesa. He is charged with an open count of murder and is being held at the Doña Ana County Detention Center.

The shooting occurred around 8 p.m. Wednesday in the 2100 block of Lynch Drive. Police and fire personnel responded to a report of a gunshot victim and found Griffin unresponsive in the roadway. He had suffered at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe Camarena and Griffin were involved in an altercation before the shooting. The case remains under investigation.
