Organ Mountain News report

LAS CRUCES - The Las Cruces Police Department is accepting applications for its Citizens Police Academy, a free four-week program designed to introduce residents to the department's philosophy, policies, and practices. The next session begins Feb. 18, 2025, and will accommodate up to 20 participants.

The program includes classroom instruction and scenario-based training on topics such as search and seizure, criminal law, use of force, crisis intervention techniques, and human performance. Some exercises may involve light physical activity and simulated stress situations.

Participants will also have the opportunity to complete an eight-hour ride-along with a police officer to observe day-to-day activities in the field.

Eligibility requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have no felony convictions.
  • Have no misdemeanor or DWI arrests within the last three years.
  • Pass a background check conducted by the Las Cruces Police Department.

Residency in Las Cruces is preferred. According to LCPD, applicants should not let these requirements keep them from applying. LCPD does not automatically eliminate candidates from attending the Citizen's Police Academy based on the above requirements. All applications are individually reviewed, and attendance decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.
