Las Cruces police are investigating a fatal shooting Friday on Berkshire Court. A woman was killed and a man later died inside the home. No names have been released.

Las Cruces police say a 28-year-old woman was killed Friday afternoon and a 38-year-old man later died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

LAS CRUCES - Police are investigating a fatal shooting that killed a 28-year-old woman Friday afternoon on the 1100 block of Berkshire Court.

Officers responded to the residence at about 4:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, after receiving a report of a shooting, according to the Las Cruces Police Department. Investigators said the woman was shot inside the home. Police have not released her name pending notification of next of kin.

Police identified a 38-year-old man as the suspect. After the shooting, the man barricaded himself inside the residence. Police deployed SWAT, hostage negotiation and K-9 teams and attempted to make contact with him.

At about 7:30 p.m., SWAT officers entered the home and found the man dead from what police believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police said the investigation is ongoing. No additional information is expected until early next week.
