Department urges residents, businesses and agencies to protect data and stay alert to online threats

Organ Mountain News report

LAS CRUCES - October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and the Las Cruces Police Department is reminding residents to stay alert, informed and proactive about digital safety.

The department emphasizes that cybersecurity is not just an IT issue but a matter of public safety and economic security. Criminals may use advanced technology or deceptive methods to gain access to devices containing sensitive information, from banking details to personal data.

LCPD recommends several steps to help individuals, families and businesses protect their information online:

  • Stay informed about current threats and best practices
  • Keep personal devices updated with the latest security patches
  • Use strong, unique passwords for all logins
  • Enable two-factor authentication when possible
  • Avoid sharing passwords or devices with others
  • Watch for phishing attempts, including suspicious emails, messages or calls requesting personal information
  • Check URLs carefully before clicking links in emails or on social media
  • Never provide personal or financial details on sites that lack a secure https connection
  • Teach children and older adults about safe technology use

LCPD officials encourage residents to treat cybersecurity as an ongoing responsibility, not just an October observance.
