Officers urge residents to stay alert and protect valuables during the busy shopping season

Organ Mountain News report

LAS CRUCES - With the holiday shopping season now underway, the Las Cruces Police Department is reminding residents to stay alert and take simple precautions that can help keep them safe in crowded stores and busy parking lots.

Officers say shoppers can reduce the risk of theft or personal harm by staying aware of their surroundings, securing valuables and avoiding distractions.

Shopping safety tips include:

  • Shop with someone when you can. Moving through crowded stores as a pair or small group is safer than going alone.
  • Keep electronics, gifts and other valuables out of sight. Store them in a trunk or take them home before continuing your shopping trip.
  • Avoid stashing purchases in your vehicle and heading right back inside. Thieves often watch parking lots for that pattern. If you must keep shopping, park in a different area.
  • Always roll up windows and lock your vehicle before walking away.
  • Never leave children or pets inside a parked vehicle.
  • Do not leave your car running unattended, even for a short errand.
  • Keep young children close. Don’t let them roam stores alone.
  • Avoid placing your purse, phone or other valuables in a shopping cart.
  • Carry your purse close to you, or use a wallet kept in a front pocket.
  • Place keys in a secure pocket or inside your purse so they’re not easily grabbed.
  • Use credit or debit cards when possible. If you carry cash, keep amounts small.
  • Don’t overload yourself with too many bags in dimly lit parking lots.
  • Have your car keys ready before you step outside.
  • After dark, choose a spot near the store entrance or another well-lit area.
  • Parking near a cart return corral can also help you stay closer to your vehicle when loading and returning your cart.
  • If you’re uneasy, ask store security for an escort to your vehicle.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.
  • Try not to get distracted by your phone or other devices when walking to or from the store.
  • Call police right away if you see suspicious behavior or feel unsafe.
