Shooting occurred near Lohman Avenue during attempted contact; no officers injured

LAS CRUCES - Police shot and killed a suspect Friday afternoon during a narcotics investigation in Las Cruces, according to authorities.

The shooting occurred around 2 p.m. in the 2300 block of Lohman Avenue, near McDonald’s.

Metro Narcotics agents had been conducting surveillance on a subject and attempted to make contact when shots were fired, according to a news release.

The suspect, identified only as a 45-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said a firearm was recovered from the suspect.

No law enforcement officers were injured.

The shooting is being investigated by the Officer-Involved Incident Task Force, which includes investigators from New Mexico State Police, the Las Cruces Police Department, the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State University Police.

Authorities said the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. A news conference is expected once more information is confirmed and witness interviews are completed.
