City library system expects slower flow of new titles during transition; patrons may see longer hold times

Organ Mountain News report

LAS CRUCES - Las Cruces Public Libraries are searching for a new book vendor after Baker & Taylor announced bankruptcy on Oct. 7. The move caught libraries nationwide off guard and is expected to slow the flow of new materials.

During the transition, staff will rely on alternate purchasing methods. The system will not see a steady influx of new items until a replacement vendor is in place, and patrons may notice longer waits for holds.

“Library staff were surprised that Baker & Taylor announced they would be shutting their doors in January 2026,” Deputy Director Sarah Booth said. “Library staff is committed to ensuring our patrons get new and replacement items during this transition period. We understand how frustrating this may be and are working diligently to find a new vendor.”

For information, contact Sarah Booth, deputy director, at 575-528-4017 / TTY 711 or sbooth@lascruces.gov.
