LAS CRUCES – Las Cruces Public Schools joined districts across the country in celebrating School Lunch Hero Day on May 2, recognizing the critical role cafeteria staff play in supporting student health and learning.

Each day, 201 nutrition professionals across the district prepare and serve meals that help fuel students for academic success. Their work, LCPS officials said, goes beyond the kitchen.

“They create a welcoming environment where students feel valued and cared for,” said Maria Guerra, director of nutrition services for the district. “Their hard work and dedication ensure that our students receive healthy meals in a positive and supportive setting.”

In addition to serving students at LCPS campuses, the district’s nutrition services team also prepares meals for La Academia Dolores Huerta, NMSU Pre-K, and summer meal programs hosted by both Doña Ana County and the City of Las Cruces.

To show their appreciation, schools across the district created posters and encouraged students to write thank-you notes to cafeteria staff.

School Lunch Hero Day is a national celebration led by the School Nutrition Association. More information is available at schoolnutrition.org. Those interested in joining the LCPS Nutrition Services team can apply at lcps.net.
