MESILLA - The Mesilla Valley Fine Arts Gallery will highlight two featured artists in September — gourd designer Patricia Black and watercolorist John Glass.

Black creates her works by growing and drying gourds for up to a year before sketching designs and burning them into the surface with a heated pen. She then adds color with acrylic paints and dyes, seals the gourds, and often finishes them with beads, feathers, pine needles, horsehair or leather.

Glass, originally from rural Indiana, now lives in the mountains near Deming. His watercolors have been recognized in state and regional competitions and he has earned awards from the Hoosier Salon, Sarasota Art League and MasterWorks of New Mexico. He is a signature member of the New Mexico Watercolor Society.

A reception celebrating artist Georgia O’Keeffe’s birthday is planned for November. Details will be announced later.
