Eighth-grade student Adam Cram earned a $2,500 scholarship after taking first place in the District 19 competition for New Mexico and West Texas.

LAS CRUCES - Las Cruces Public Schools is celebrating a Mesilla Valley Leadership Academy student who won a regional essay contest and earned a $2,500 scholarship.

Adam Cram, an eighth-grade student at MVLA, took first place in the District 19 Optimist Essay Contest for New Mexico and West Texas, according to LCPS.

This year’s contest theme was “How My Acts of Service Help Me Understand What My Community Means to Me.”

As the district winner, Cram received a $2,500 scholarship. His essay will also appear in The Optimist magazine, published by Optimist International.

“Adam did an outstanding job expressing this year’s theme through thoughtful writing and personal reflection,” Patricia Siewert, District Essay Chair, said in a statement. “His essay truly captured the importance of service and community.”

The Optimist Essay Contest encourages students to express their views about the world around them through writing. District 19 has participated in the contest for more than 20 years.

Optimist International is a service club organization with more than 80,000 adult and youth members in 2,500 clubs across the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico, according to the organization.
