LAS CRUCES - A new nurse residency program at MountainView Regional Medical Center is aiming to bolster the local health care workforce by helping newly licensed nurses transition into clinical practice — and encouraging them to build long-term careers in southern New Mexico.

The yearlong program, which began in March, welcomed 13 recent graduates from New Mexico State University and Doña Ana Community College. It’s designed to offer mentorship, hands-on experience and support as new nurses adjust to the demands of full-time patient care.

“As we face a nationwide nursing shortage, our new Nurse Residency Program at MountainView is a critical step toward not only supporting newly licensed nurses but also retaining talent right here in Las Cruces,” said Matthew Conrad, the hospital’s CEO.

Registered nurses remain in high demand across New Mexico. The New Mexico Health Care Work Force Committee’s most recent report projects a 15 percent increase in RN jobs statewide by 2032 — with Las Cruces expected to see the fastest growth, at 24 percent.

MountainView Chief Nursing Officer AJ Stephens said the program adheres to national best practices, including standards from the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Practice Transition Accreditation Program.

“Accredited nurse residency programs are the gold standard for transition to professional practice,” Stephens said. “They yield higher nurse satisfaction, decreased nursing turnover, improved quality outcomes and decreased health care costs.”

The hospital’s 12-month program includes clinical mentorship, evidence-based practice, and leadership development. It aims to enhance critical thinking, strengthen clinical decision-making, and support ongoing professional growth.

Applications are accepted twice a year — in January and June — for start dates in February and July. Interested applicants can learn more at mountainviewregional.com/career-opportunities, or contact RN Director of Education Jessica Hall at 575-556-3257 or jessica.hall@mountainviewregional.com.
