State says refundable credits may benefit parents, low-income filers and working families

Organ Mountain News report

SANTA FE - The New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department is reminding residents that state and federal income tax returns are due Wednesday, April 15.

Officials said taxpayers who do not owe taxes should still consider filing a return because they may qualify for refundable tax credits that could result in a refund.

New Mexico offers several tax credits that may benefit parents, working families and low-income taxpayers.

Most residents can file their state returns online for free using the department’s Taxpayer Access Point portal at https://tap.state.nm.us/.

Taxpayers can also use the portal to check the status of their refund. Officials said electronically filed returns typically result in faster refunds than paper filings.

The department said filing early may also reduce the risk of identity theft involving fraudulent tax returns.

Officials also warned residents to watch for tax scams. The department does not make unsolicited phone calls to taxpayers. In some cases, the agency may contact taxpayers by mail to verify information on personal income tax returns as part of efforts to prevent identity theft.

Suspicious communications can be reported to the department’s Tax Fraud Investigations Division by emailing Tax.Fraud@tax.nm.gov or calling 1-866-457-6789.

Personal income tax forms and instructions are available at https://tax.newmexico.gov.

Information about in-person and online filing assistance is available on the department’s personal income tax filing assistance page, along with a list of approved tax preparation software providers.
