SANTA FE - New Mexico has acquired nearly 11,000 acres in the Mimbres Valley for a new wildlife management area that will protect habitat along the Mimbres River and expand future public recreation opportunities.

The property borders the Gila National Forest and includes about 2 miles of the Mimbres River, along with high-desert grasslands, pinyon-juniper woodlands, riparian bosque and ponderosa pine stands, according to Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s office.

The acquisition creates the Mimbres Ranch Wildlife Management Area and protects habitat for wildlife including elk, mule deer, bears, mountain lions, wild turkey and quail.

State officials also highlighted habitat for two native fish species, the Rio Grande sucker and Chihuahua chub.

“This will create additional habitat for conserving the Rio Grande sucker and Chihuahua chub,” Fisheries Management Division Chief Kirk Patten said. “Both these fish are native to the Mimbres drainage, and this acquisition will ensure they continue to thrive there for years to come.”

The property was acquired through the Trust for Public Land as part of a partnership involving state officials, conservation organizations and local communities.

Rep. Nathan Small, D-Las Cruces, advocated for the acquisition and allocated funding for the project.

“The Mimbres Ranch Wildlife Management Area will enhance this ecosystem and create new recreation opportunities, including opportunities for New Mexico resident hunters,” Small said.

Its location next to the Gila National Forest creates a larger connected block of wildlife habitat, according to the state.

Officials said additional details about public access and management of the newly acquired property will be announced later.
