SANTA FE - New Mexico State Parks will offer free day use Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7, at state parks that provide fishing and boating opportunities.

The promotion marks the opening weekend of National Fishing and Boating Week, which runs June 6-14.

“Outdoor recreation is part of New Mexico’s culture, and this week is a reminder of how much fishing and boating contribute to our quality of life,” State Parks Director Toby Velásquez said in a news release. “By offering free day use during the opening weekend of National Fishing and Boating Week, we hope more families will get outside, experience a new state park and connect with New Mexico’s rural communities.”

State Parks said visitors can use parks with lakes, rivers, trails and shoreline access for activities including fishing, camping, hiking, paddling and wildlife viewing.

National Fishing and Boating Week highlights fishing and boating activities and the conservation work supported through the Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration Act. State Parks said the program has contributed more than $12 billion nationwide since 1950 for fisheries management, aquatic education, habitat restoration and boating access.

Visitors should check current conditions, fire restrictions and weather advisories before traveling. More information is available through the New Mexico State Parks website.
