SANTA FE - The New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department is warning the public not to respond to scam text messages demanding payments or personal information.

Officials said the department never sends text messages about tax or motor vehicle issues. Similar scams have been reported across New Mexico and in other states.

Residents who receive suspicious texts are encouraged to report the number or forward a copy to the department’s Tax Fraud Investigations Division by emailing Tax.Fraud@tax.nm.gov or calling the tax fraud hotline at 1-866-457-6789.

If a caller or messenger is threatening you, contact your local law enforcement.

The agency said it only calls individuals who have not already reached out for help — and only after collection letters have been sent. Residents can confirm they are speaking with an official representative by verifying a prior letter ID or by calling the department’s call center directly.
