Scam sites mimic MVD pages to collect fake toll fines, officials say

Organ Mountain News report

SANTA FE - New Mexico does not operate toll roads, and state officials are warning residents about phishing websites trying to collect fake toll payments by impersonating the Motor Vehicle Division.

The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division says the fraudulent sites are designed to look like the official MVD website and are often encountered on mobile devices.

Officials say the scam pages mimic the agency’s branding, layout and navigation to appear legitimate, with the goal of tricking users into entering personal and financial information.

The MVD emphasized it will never contact customers by text message to demand payment or threaten enforcement.

Residents are urged to verify any website by manually typing the official MVD address, www.mvd.newmexico.gov, into a browser rather than clicking links from text messages or emails.

If a suspicious message is received, officials advise not clicking any links or sharing personal information.

The agency said it is working to identify and take down fraudulent websites as they appear.

Customers can verify information through the official MVD website or by contacting the agency directly.
