Keys to Victory

1. Establish the running game

James Jones averages 99.8 rushing yards per game. A productive ground attack could ease the pressure against Sam Houston's fourth-ranked passing defense.

2. Pressure the quarterback

NM State has 15 sacks this season, while Sam Houston has surrendered 17. Gabe Peterson and the Aggie pass rush have an opportunity to exploit that matchup.

3. Protect the football

Three turnovers contributed to the Aggies' 22-3 loss to FIU. Avoiding costly mistakes will be essential to getting the offense back on track.

LAS CRUCES - New Mexico State returns to Conference USA football Wednesday with an offense looking to recover from its lowest-scoring performance of the season and a defense that could provide an advantage against Sam Houston.

The Aggies (2-4, 1-1 CUSA) will face the Bearkats (1-5, 0-2 CUSA) at 6 p.m. Mountain time at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium in Huntsville, Texas. ESPN2 will televise the game.

NM State is coming off a 22-3 loss at Florida International, where three turnovers contributed to an offensive performance that produced only a 26-yard field goal by Kyah Francone.

After playing three games in 12 days, the Aggies had 13 full days without a game during their bye week.

Wednesday's matchup presents an opportunity to regain momentum in conference play, although Sam Houston's defense presents a significant challenge.

Aggies' passing offense faces tough test

Sam Houston enters the game allowing just 137.8 passing yards per contest, the fourth-lowest average in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Only Texas Tech has surpassed 200 passing yards against the Bearkats this season.

That defensive strength will test an NM State offense averaging 230.5 passing yards per game. The Aggies have exceeded 200 passing yards in four of their six games.

The teams have one notable common opponent.

NM State defeated Western Kentucky 34-13 in its conference opener Oct. 1, while Sam Houston is coming off a 16-3 home loss to the Hilltoppers.

The Aggies' win over Western Kentucky was their first victory in a Conference USA opener since joining the league.

Pass rush could provide an advantage

NM State's defense has produced 15 sacks through six games, ranking second in Conference USA.

Defensive end Gabe Peterson leads the team with 4.5 sacks, also second in the conference. He recorded a career-high two sacks and three tackles for loss in the loss to FIU.

Sam Houston has allowed 17 sacks this season, the second-highest total in CUSA.

The Aggies have also been effective against the run.

They held Western Kentucky to 46 rushing yards, their third game this season allowing fewer than 75. According to NMSU Athletics, it marked the first time since at least 1994 that the Aggies accomplished that feat three times in one season.

Sam Houston enters Wednesday averaging 95 rushing yards per game, ranking 133rd among 138 FBS teams.

NM State has forced at least one turnover in 21 of its past 22 games, dating to the 2024 season.

James Jones approaches career milestone

Running back James Jones has emerged as one of the Aggies' most productive offensive players.

Jones leads Conference USA with an average of 99.8 rushing yards per game and has gained 599 yards on 92 carries this season.

He rushed for 155 yards against Western Kentucky, earning CUSA Offensive Player of the Week honors, then added 89 yards against FIU.

Jones enters Wednesday needing 81 rushing yards to reach 2,000 for his college career.

His production could be particularly important against Sam Houston's pass defense, giving NM State another way to move the ball.

Wednesday night under the lights

Wednesday's game will be the fourth meeting between NM State and Sam Houston and the Aggies' second visit to Huntsville.

The contest will be televised nationally on ESPN2, with Jorge Sedano handling play-by-play, Rodney McLeod providing analysis and Kendra Douglas reporting from the sidelines.

Las Cruces-area listeners can follow the game on 99.5 FM KXPZ, with MJ Newsom and Cory Lucas calling the action.

For NM State, the immediate challenge is straightforward: generate more offense than it did against FIU while continuing the defensive production that has kept the Aggies competitive in conference play.
