Las Cruces and Doña Ana County get two of the state’s newly named snowplows for the 2026 winter season

SANTA FE - The New Mexico Department of Transportation has announced the winners of its 2026 Name a Snowplow contest, and southern New Mexico will soon see two newly named trucks on the road.

District 1, which includes Las Cruces and Doña Ana County, will be home to snowplows named “Chilly Changa” and “DuckDuckOrangeTruck.”

NMDOT said people from across the state submitted names, continuing a yearly tradition that mixes winter road safety with New Mexico humor and creativity.

“These trucks play an important role in keeping our roads safe during the winter months,” the agency said in a statement. “Look for our newly named plows on roads near you.”

District 1 crews use snowplows to clear highways, mountain passes and rural roads during winter storms that can affect travel between Las Cruces, Silver City and other parts of southern New Mexico.

Statewide, NMDOT selected two names for each of its six districts:

  • District 1: Chilly Changa, DuckDuckOrangeTruck
  • District 2: Snowtorious B.I.G., Scoop There It Is
  • District 3: Cinder-ella, Clarence
  • District 4: A La Cinders, Down Wit Da Slikness
  • District 5: Snowbi Wan Kenobi, Nope. School’s On
  • District 6: Saltimus Prime, Betty Whiteout

NMDOT runs the contest each year to highlight the work of maintenance crews who clear snow and ice from highways during winter storms.

For drivers in Las Cruces and across Doña Ana County, that means if a snowstorm hits this winter, the trucks doing the heavy lifting may now come with a little extra personality — and names easy to spot when they roll by.
