Milestone reflects continued community-focused reporting across southern New Mexico

LAS CRUCES - Organ Mountain News has published its 1,000th story — a milestone that reflects an ambitious pace of community-focused reporting across southern New Mexico.

Since launching, the independent newsroom has covered public safety, courts, local government and community life across Doña Ana County and beyond. The work has often focused on issues residents say matter most in their daily lives.

Reaching 1,000 stories also reflects something else — the ongoing conversation between this newsroom and the community it serves.

Through emails, tips and everyday conversations, readers have helped shape the reporting priorities at Organ Mountain News. Those conversations continue to guide the newsroom’s work.

Today, that commitment is reflected in several areas of coverage.

Based on feedback and an ongoing commitment to community listening, Organ Mountain News has redoubled our effort to provide readers with local public safety coverage — some of which you are unlikely to find anywhere else.

As southern New Mexico continues to see spikes in measles cases, the newsroom has also focused attention on public health reporting and the potential impact on communities across the region.

With the entire state debating Project Jupiter, Organ Mountain News has committed itself to covering the issue and examining how the proposed data center could affect communities across Doña Ana County. It is a topic we will continue watching closely.

And as changes to federal policy continue to affect residents of southern New Mexico, readers have said they want clearer explanations of how those decisions shape daily life in their communities. That perspective will remain part of our reporting.

One thousand stories is a milestone, but it is also simply another step in the work ahead.

Organ Mountain News will continue reporting on the issues shaping southern New Mexico — one story at a time.

A note from the founder:
