Person rescued after falling 60 feet into abandoned mine shaft in Organ Mountains

A person was rescued after falling more than 60 feet into an abandoned mine shaft in the Organ Mountains, with Las Cruces firefighters using a rope system to bring them to safety.

Las Cruces firefighters use rope system to pull individual to safety after 911 call from inside shaft

LAS CRUCES - A person was rescued Monday morning after falling more than 60 feet into an abandoned mine shaft in the Organ Mountains.

The Las Cruces Fire Department’s technical rescue team responded around 10:30 a.m. alongside New Mexico State Police after receiving a report of the fall.

Authorities said the individual fell from a rope and became trapped deep inside the shaft without a way out. The person was able to reach an area with cell service and call 911.

Rescuers located the shaft and set up a rope system to reach the individual and bring them back to the surface.

The person suffered rope burn injuries to the arms and hands but had no other reported injuries.

No firefighters were injured during the rescue.
