LAS CRUCES - Picacho Middle School said it is “heartbroken by the loss” of a 13-year-old student who was shot earlier this week in Las Cruces, identifying the student as Chris in a statement posted to Facebook on Thursday.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this incredibly difficult time,” the school wrote. “We also honor the powerful legacy he leaves through the gift of organ donation, allowing his light to live on in others.”

The school did not explicitly confirm the student’s condition.

The statement marks the first time the school has publicly identified the student following the shooting, which was previously reported by Organ Mountain News.

Picacho Middle School described Chris as “a bright light on our campus” and said he will “always be part of our Scorpion family.”

The school also said counseling and support services are available for students and staff who may need them.
