Organ Mountain News report

LAS CRUCES - Las Cruces police are asking for the public’s help as they investigate the suspicious death of a 63-year-old man found near a bus stop on east Lohman Avenue Thursday afternoon.

Emergency responders were called around 4:30 p.m. June 12 to reports of a man lying face down near the bus stop between Nacho Drive and Foothills Road, near the ramp to the Las Cruces Dam recreation area. Officers found the man — later identified as Luther Lewis Gilbert — unresponsive with visible facial injuries and showing signs of agonal breathing, a severe medical emergency often associated with trauma or the end of life.

Despite lifesaving efforts, Gilbert was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives with LCPD’s Criminal Investigations Division are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding his death and are asking to speak with anyone who:

  • Saw Gilbert on Thursday,
  • Observed him near the bus stop shortly before the emergency call, or
  • Had recent interactions with him.

Anyone with information is asked to call LCPD at 575-526-0795 or the Criminal Investigations Division directly at 575-528-4222.
