LCPD says encounter began at Walmart during reported theft call and ended after additional gunfire exchanges

Organ Mountain News report

LAS CRUCES - A suspect is dead after firing at a Las Cruces police officer and fleeing on foot early Sunday morning, leading to multiple exchanges of gunfire across the South Valley Drive area, according to police.

Las Cruces police said the initial call came in at about 7:21 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 8.

According to police, an officer working approved off-duty employment at Walmart, 1550 S. Valley Drive, was flagged down regarding a reported bicycle theft. The officer located the suspect and attempted to detain him.

Police said the suspect fired at least one round at the officer. The officer returned fire and the suspect fled on foot.

Additional officers responded and attempted to establish a perimeter around the area. Police said further exchanges of gunfire occurred between officers and the suspect during that response. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, though authorities have not specified the exact location where the fatal shooting occurred.

Investigators secured multiple scenes surrounding Valley Drive as part of the response.

Police have not released the suspect’s identity or said whether any officers were injured. The department said it plans to hold a news conference once more information is confirmed.

Walmart on South Valley Drive and nearby businesses may be affected as the investigation continues.

The multi-agency Officer-involved Incident Task Force — which includes investigators from New Mexico State Police, Las Cruces Police Department, Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State University Police — is investigating the shooting. Findings will be presented to the Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
